Is Austrian Crystal the Same as Swarovski Crystal? NO. Swarovski Austrian crystal is in a league of it's own. "Austrian Crystal" simply means crystal made in Austria. Those are always high in Lead and sold as "Austrian", "Full Lead" "30% Lead" or "32% Lead", etc. Swarovski makes a Lead and a No Lead crystal. Poorly cut, cheap glass crystal can sometimes be mistaken for plastic acrylic. Not so with fine glass crystals. If it is genuine Swarovski Austrian Crystal, the seller always makes that clear since they are known as the best in the world; better than regular Austrian Crystal. If the seller is mentioning Swarovski, but not using the word Swarovski in the actual product name that ends up on your receipt, (not Leaded or Austrian or Swarovski-like or Swarovski-ish), you can be sure it is not Swarovski, no matter what they tell you by phone; It should be in writing. Order in sufficient quantities and we can send them in the genuine Swarovski branded boxes that the crystals originally come in.

No Lead, Glass Crystal is Lighter & Less Fragile than Lead Crystal

All lead crystal is more fragile, (not less fragile) than no-lead or glass crystal. Lead Crystal or Austrian Crystal is also substantially heavier. Crystal makers know and confirm that Lead, although a metal, causes the glass to actually become more brittle.

Are the Crystals Clear or Colored?

The picture and video above show colorless, CLEAR Swarovski Lead Free. What looks like "color" is actual, natural rainbows formed by it's glamorous sparkle. No "Aurora Borealis AB plastic coating (commonly used on cheaper glass crystals and plastic acrylic "crystals" to "mimic" rainbows they're not making).

1' Foot Crystal Ropes Actually Stretch Your Budget & Hang Better

If hanging crystal ropes over tree branches, 1' ropes are better to use since you can adjust the length easily for a custom length. If looping yard long chains over a branch, at the top where the crystal chain must bend in order to hang down the other side, you have a crystal laying on the top of the branch. At left, you see a picture of our 1' Swarovski crystal ropes. They are attached hanging straight down, hooked by the top hook, directly to the branch.

In addition to being messier, doubling crystal ropes over one side of a branch and down the other side causes crystals to be facing one way on one side and facing the other way on the way down. For 2' ropes, hook two of our one foot ropes to another 2' rope in literally 2 seconds. You can do the same to make long, 6' ropes.

As you can see, the swarovski crystals are stunningly beautiful. The good thing about high quality crystals like this is that they look amazing even in mediocre lighting. Good lighting just makes them look even better, taking them to another level.

Chains with Bow-Tie Connectors and Diamond Cut Crystals (any connector)

Looping chains over branches is especially bad if your chains or ropes use bow-tie connectors which look far different from the front than from the back. You want the front of the bow-tie facing OUT, not in. This means you would have to actually separate the 3' or a 1 yard rope into two in order to have the crystals all facing the right way. If you are using crystals that are pointed on the back and flat on the front (diamond shaped), this is also not good. The crystals on one side would look fine and once looped over, coming down the back, they would be backwards.

Diamond cut crystals are supposed to be used with the flat side out and the point in, funneling the light up and out through the flat front of the crystal. Better to hang each chain straight down. Use either one, 1' rope or hook two together in 1 second and you have a two foot rope; perfect for 6' and even 7' trees as you see on our huge 7' foot tree with thousands of crystals at the top of this page.

What Does "MM" in Crystal Descriptions Mean?

Crystals are sold in mm sizes. MM size refers to the length of the crystal in most cases, depending on the shape of the crystal.

For octagon shape or round shapes, the mm size given is both the width and length of the crystal. For Teardrop shaped crystals or Almond shapes which are longer than they are wide, the mm size is referring to the longest dimension of the crystal from top to bottom.

The pink chart shown here, approximates what some common crystal millimeter sizes are similar to.

To see in front of you, what each mm size looks like, you can get a coin from your wallet or purse. You can also look at each product description and you will see the mm size broken down into fractions of an inch. For example, 14mm products also state that they are .55" inches. This means that 16mm is the same as .55" on a ruler. Look at a ruler at the 1/2" inch mark and note that 14mm is .05" of an inch larger than 1/2" an inch wide.

Although photos partially capture it's rainbows, photos can't truly capture Swarovski's glamorously, firey sparkle. Our photos are a mere taste; the movement of their crisp, rich rainbows is exquisite in person. Lead Free Swarovski is virtually indistinguishable from Swarovski Strass when hung together. Photographs simply cannot fully capture the rainbows or sparkle of fine Swarovski crystal. Crystal Size Conversions Tips:

1 inch = 25.5mm Multiply mm by.0392 to get size in inches or fractions of an inch so that you can visualize the size by looking at a ruler. Note: 20mm is the size of a U.S. nickle and 28mm is the size of a U.S. quarter. 16mm is about the size of a dime. 14mm is significantly smaller than a dime and is not recommended for any crystal tree project. You will find it simply too small to make an impact for the trees, but they are great linked together into ropes for decorating candelabras, candle sticks, chandeliers and other event decorations.

Note: Lead Crystal Warning

California Government Proposition 65 (you can Google it) states that any lead in crystal products including prisms, figurines, vases, etc. can cause reproductive and other harm from handling or ingestion of microscopic particles from handling. For this reason, among others, we no longer sell any loose pieces of lead crystals, but only Swarovski LEAD FREE which was used in both project #1 and #2 on our Stunning decor Projects pages. There is no other lead free or glass crystal that can even remotely compare. They simply don't sparkle as well. If it's not going to sparkle, what's the point of a crystal tree, right?
