We sell wholesale crystals and wholesale crystal garlands for home decor, lighting events and weddings. Swarovski crystals are argueably the best crystals that money can buy. Unfortunately, most people have no point of reference point for determining if the Swarovski crystals they bought are real or fake. The perfect reference point would be to have a known Swarovski crystal piece of the same style in hand to compare the new item to.
Many people can't tell if the little bit of shine that they see coming from a low quality crystal chains is as good as it gets or if there is something better. How do you know if shine is just ... shine and how does shine compare to real SPARKLE?
Why we are Putting this Little-known Info out There
Primarily, we are doing this because there is a site that states that some people may be buying fake Swarovski crystals and then goes on to give general information on Swarovski crystals. It puts a seed of doubt into the minds of anyone who may be wanting to buy Swarovski lead free glass crystals but don't want to be burned.
We must give these tips so that you can then use them to authenticate the Swarovski products that you buy from us. It's not just to compare what you get from someone else. Use them on ours as well. Our knees aren't even knocking.
Fact - Some Sites are Selling Lower Quality Glass Crystals as Swarovski
Because most customers have never purchased Swarovski crystals and do not know how good Swarovski crystals are as a reference point, we thought we would offer some tips for the novice crystal buyer. We aren't the crystals police and aren't throwing any other site under the bus. We won't be naming any names or exposing any site in particular. We are just giving you some very candid and useful help.
Why Authenticate Your Swarovski Crystals?
As surprising as it is, there are at least two or three high and not so high profile crystal sellers online that are actually telling customers that they are offering Swarovski crystals when in reality, they are sending lower quality glass crystals. To any business owner who feels that we are pulling the covers off of them, we hope that they will do the right thing and make a change instead of blaming us for helping the consumer. Remember, that with these tips, we are subjecting our own products to the same scrutiny in the process.
If someone has never had filet mignon, how would they know that the reasonably edible chuck steak in their mouth is not filet, but just chuck steak? An expert might have to give someone who's never had it a few clues. Subtle clues such as "hey, you know .. filet mignon isn't supposed to be so ... tough to chew and swallow" or "you know ... filet mignon is supposed to be a little, thicker than that pancake of a steak you're eating" or "hey, that greyish color is kind of ... weird for filet mignon".
When holding a reasonably good glass crystal that was supposed to be fine Swarovski crystal garlands or prisms, you may not know that it's supposed to be better. This is especially true if you have never seen the real thing before.

Note: low quality crystal won't do what you see in this video even with the best lighting on the planet. And as for acrylic, you would need good light ... but a good light on the end of your MAGIC WAND to make it do this!
What about Lighting?
Good lighting, ambient light, event lighting, or candle light helps all crystals, however, lighting isn't going to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. You can light acrylic until it's on fire and this will not happen.
We are not throwing any particular website or retailer under the bus (which is why we aren't naming any name now or ever). If you have purchased it, you will probably be able to tell if you use this information. Use this information not only to tell if crystals you bought somewhere else but hold our genuine Swarovski crystal products to the same standard.
We absolutely adore the Swarovski crystals (as you can tell from our gushing praise on our site).. We hate when something else that may not compare is held up as being the same. Not everyone wants to pay for Swarovski so there is no need.
Consumers, please take this information for what it's worth and be careful that you don't apply it where the evidence does not match. We are honest and when we sell Swarovski, we ship Swarovski. If we make a mistake, we'll fix it. We just wish that everyone out there would do the same. People will like it if it is high quality. If your product is great, call it what it is and let the chips fall where they may. It's why we don't call our Ethereal or crystals or our Quality Glass Crystals, Swarovski.
Sparkle or Shine?
Of course, experts agree that Swarovski lead crystals and Swarovski no lead crystals have superior sparkle in comparison to lower quality glass crystals. However, without having samples in hand, how can you tell if what you've got is real? Sure you can tell if it's pure dime-store junk or not, but beyond that, where is the measuring mark?
Unless you have some really cheap, low quality glass or plastic in hand, you can't really know for sure because you have no point of reference to hold up next to it. For this reason we will give you a number of tips, but first. you may want to know how we know some nameless sites are committing this fraud.
We have had some customers who brought some of their "non-Swarovski, Swarovski" purchases to our attention. Some of them, purchased the fake Swarovski crystals elsewhere and then bought the real thing from us and couldn't believe the difference. They then contacted us to let us know how pleased they were with the real Swarovski crystals that they received from us.
In some cases, we have actually called companies when we saw items deceptively said to be real Swarovski but with a price too low to be genuine. It's like someone selling new Coach bags for $30. It's either fake or stolen.
On these websites, they usually don't use the words Swarovski but when customers call them, they claim it to be Swarovski. by telephone only. Nothing is usually in writing stating the items are Swarovski. Swarovski sellers use the word openly. It's like selling a used Mercedes online and just calling it a nice car. It's a major selling point which means you don't hide it.
In another case, a customer called us and brought to our attention a competitor's website where they were posting a photograph of a crystal ball that was previously called (for years) just "Glass Ball", but suddenly turned into Swarovski. They were indeed using the same photograph of their lower quality Crystal Ball which has been online for years before it miraculously morphed into Swarovski.
Previously, this crystal ball was simply called "Glass Ball" with the various mm sizes. Now, the same photograph was still being used, but the name changes to Swarovski Crystal Ball once you click on the smaller product photo for more information. Interestingly, the price is also the same as it was when it was simply "Crystal Ball".
A customer pointed out to us that she had not only purchased the competitors crystal ball sold to her as "Swarovski" by the wording on the website (but not on her receipt), our Ethereal crystal ball and a Swarovski crystal ball from us.
She noted that our Swarovski crystal ball costs more than the one sold to her as a Swarovski crystal ball from another site, but that none of the 3 balls she purchased were identical! She noted that our Swarovski was the best, our Ethereal was the 2nd best and that the other ball sold as Swarovski came in last of the three balls.
How is this possible if both were really Swarovski? When the customer emailed the company about the problems, she told us that she received form emails that did not answer the questions and then received no responses at all. This customer also forwarded us a copy of the emails. When we looked into it, we discovered the same curiosities that the mutual customer had noticed. The price on the "Swarovski" Glass Ball was the same as it had been on this competitors old Crystal Ball (closely similar to our price on our lower quality Ethereal Glass Balls). It was also confirmed that when you put the "Crystal Ball" in the shopping cart on this site, it does not state the item being purchased is Swarovski, but simply "Crystal Ball" again. It may have been changed by now, but when we last checked, it remained the same.
The "Hole" Truth - When a "Swarovski Glass Ball" is Not Swarovski
Later, the same customer emailed us that she made another discovery. She explained to us that the glass ball that she had gotten from the other site, has a white-ish, cloudy hole (similar to ice). Please note: if you ever buy a Swarovski Glass Ball or other shape prisms from any website and have no way of comparing the quality or sparkle to real Swarovski crystals, one way to tell is that Swarovski prisms have a perfectly clear (not cloudy) hole. If it's cloudy or white through the hole (at the top of the ball) or if the crystals are mis-shaped or oddly bottom heavy, these are
not Swarovski, but lower quality ball prisms.
General Tips for Separating Real Swarovski Crystal Decorations from Fakes.
Swarovski Has:
1. Pristine Sparkle and can make lovely rainbows
2. Lots of facets (cuts and surfaces, similar to the many surfaces of a diamond). Many facets are key to great sparkle.
3. Sharp Facets, not rounded as if pressed from a mold. Sharp facets are key to great sparkle.
4. No cloudiness that can't be cleaned off. Pure, high quality glass is key to great sparkle. Swarovski may have finger prints as with any crystal, but once wiped off, absoluely no cloudiness.
5. No plastic feel. NO PLASTIC is KEY to great sparkle!
6. Highest Quality Connectors on most Swarovski Chains. This is not a hard and fast rule, but they are not usually connected into chains using round, doubled over wire loops. This is not always the case, but usually since this is the cheapest, least long lasting type of connector. It works fine but may not give you thelook you want. Some like it, some don't. It is commonly used on most of the lower and lowest quality acrylic and glass.
Swarovski, when they manufacture the chains with loops, uses a solid ring that is not wire and meets or comes together evenly at the center. It does not loop around halfway again or spring out into a coil when pulled on as with many wire loops. Bow-ties and straight connectors are usually the top of the line choice. Again, this is general, but not a hard and fast rule.
7. Minimal imperfections such as scratches, bubbles, marks. Swarovski is virtually flawless. Cheap crystals have a multitude of imperfections. A scratch here and there happens, but not all over all of the crystals unless they've taken a beating.
8. No Cloudy or white-ish, ice looking connector or hanging holes. Lesser quality crystals can also have clear holes that are not white so clear holes does not mean it is Swarovski. Cloudy holes however, means it defintely is not. Cloudy holes are most common in the ball shape and some other prism shapes. Octagons and teardrops usually do not have cloudy white looking holes, even in lower quality crystals. This problem is most common on the balls and a few other shapes that have the same type of thick hanging point at the top as the balls.
9. Symmetrical, not mis-shaped. Balls are widest in the middle, not at the bottom. They don't look bottom heavy. All of the Swarovski styles are perfectly shaped and even on both sides. Octagons are not flat on the front and pointed on the back and not flat on either side. Both sides have a slight point and none have a silver foil on the back unless they are the flat backs Swarovski rhinestones meant for clothing and decorating by gluing onto objects etc.
10. The crystal garlands, crystal strands, crystal ropes or chains don't usually come in plastic bags or unmarked white cardboard boxes. The loose pieces don't usually come in paper thin plastic holding trays that flop like a wilted leaf when you try to hold it up. Swarovski protects them like precious eggs in firm trays with specially sized compartments. If you buy just a few or less than a full tray of prisms, they may be simply wrapped in something else for you and then should be in bubble wrap.
11. Sold to you with the Swarovski name stated on your receipt. Not Swarovski-like, Swarovski-ish, Austrian Crystals, Austrian-style, Swarovski-style or anything similar.
12. High enough quality so that they generally can be photographed to show some of the actual sparkle, (without adding those little pristine pasted on "stars" meant to represent "sparkle").
13. Strass Swarovski crystals contain the Strass logo etched into the glass itself. The lead free version of Swarovski fine crystals, do not have an etching in the glass, but unlike lower quality glass crystals, they do hold up to the standards above.
14. Swarovski crystals will not likely be sent to you without bubble wrap or sufficient packaging. Cheap crystals are often sent barely wrapped. This is because bubble wrap itself costs more than some of the crystals. Better to refund for a few broken pieces than spend all that money protecting it. They are also frequently sent uninsured by postal service for the same reason. You don't want to send Swarovski that way.
We Guarantee Genuine Swarovski Crystal Products
When you buy from us, If you purchase in large enough quantity, we can send them in the genuine Swarovski packaging if you request it. In smaller quantities, everyone can't get the box because the items are removed from the box and sent to various customers, however, All of our Swarovski crystals are genuine and meet the standards described above. We put it in writing because we know they stand the test and if sent to anyone for authentication, or if we had to stand up in court, our crystals would come back as the real thing.
Swarovski Crystal Octagon Garlands, Crystal Strands or Crystal Chains - Detailed Tips to Spot a Fake
If they are connected with spring-like wire loops, these are usually not Swarovski crystals since Swarovski does not use these. If it is a thicker metal (not thin wire) Closed "C" type loop or a loop that is small and looks like a circle that was cut at one point so that the cut ends touch to join instead of double looping back around into a bit of a coil, it may be Swarovski. This tip is not ALWAYS true because a company could be manufacturing with inexpensive spring type wire loops and genuine Swarovski crystals. Use the other tips before you make the call.
However, because Swarovski is highest quality, it is not typical to then use the least expensive, most commonly used connection method, especially since wire loop / coil (doubled over) loops tend to blacken or rust over time.
I don't mean tarnish, but rust. With a high quality chain that you want to last for many years, it normally would not be the chosen method, but is possible. Bow-Ties or Straight Connectors are used by Swarovski themselves and would be the preferred method to manufacture Swarovski crystal chains.
The individual crystals on the Swarovski octagon crystal chains have more than 14 facets (count all the surfaces on the front and back of the crystal, but not the sides). The lead free glass Swarovski crystals and the Strass lead Swarovski crystals are cut differantly, but both versions still have more than 16 facets. More facets, if done well, means more sparkle.
Less expensive glass crystal octagons typically will have 16 or less facets combined on front and back. This tip only applies to octagon shaped crystals, not round or any other shape.
The current styles of Swarovski crystal octagons are pointed on front and back. They are not perfectly flat on one side and pointed on the other.
Swarovski Crystals are clear not cloudy.
They do not contain numerous bumps, bubbles or scratches. Here and there maybe, but if you find many especially along the sides, check the other tips. If you have all the defects along with the other inconsistencies, you probably do not have Swarovski crystals.
Faceting is super sharp on Swarovski crystals. If you run your thumb over the facets (cuts and surfaces) and it feels rounded or as if it was pressed out of a mold instead of cut, it isn't Swarovski. Sharp facets and polishing are trademarks of Swarovski crystals that add up to that firey sparkle.
Swarovski octagons and prisms are not "thick". Lower quality crystals are thicker from front to back than Swarovski crystals. More thickness from front to back of the glass means less light refraction so thinner with crystals is better (same as with thighs!). This does not affect mm size from side to side or top to bottom, only from front to back. Swarovski Crystal Ball Prisms - Detailed Tips to Spot a Fake
soft or "rounded" facets or cuts. Fakes sometimes have sharp facets as well, but if the hole is cloudy or whitish-looking (similar to an ice cube), it is not Swarovski. Swarovski Glass Balls have sharp facets, many many facets and the hole is crystal clear, not cloudy at all. The balls are also perfectly symmetrical, they do not look strangely "bottom heavy" or mis-shaped.
A Rose by any Other Name ... is Still a Rose (NOT!) Maybe when it comes to roses, the name doesn't matter, but with Swarovski crystals, they had better be called Swarovski on your receipt or quite frankly, they are not.What does your receipt say? Swarovski Crystals are sold to you with the Swarovski name stated on your receipt. Not Swarovski-like, Swarovski-ish, Austrian Crystals, Austrian-style, Swarovski-style or anything similar.
Those terms are basically saying "we think this is close-enough" but not promising you the genuine article. Sellers of genuine Swarovski will document it in writing on your receipt and packing slip as we do. Would a diamond ring dealer give you a receipt that simply says "ring"?
When in Doubt, Check it out
If you still aren't sure, take a photograph of your piece and email it to us and we will email you a chart of all of the shapes and cuts of genuine Swarovski prisms for you to compare the cut pattern and exact shape.
For example, if your crystal ball is significantly bottom heavy or has a cloudy hole, if you compare it to the Swarovski no lead and lead crystal charts that come from Swarovski, you would find the shape or cut pattern and number of facets not to be not exact. We won't make the determination for you, but it usually speaks for itself and you should be able to make the call with the right tools.

Lead-Free Swarovski is Lighter & Less Fragile Than any Lead Crystal
All lead crystal is more fragile, (not less fragile) than no-lead or glass crystal. Crystal makers know and confirm that Lead, although a metal, causes the glass to actually become more brittle. Lead Crystal or Austrian Crystal is also substantially heavier.
Swarovki's Lead Free Crystal strands deliver their famously stunning sparkle, without the extra weight of their Strass Full Lead crystal. Both are gorgeous, but on more delicate arrangements or less hardy branches such as Birch Branches or Curly Willow Branches, lead crystal strands can be way too heavy. Swarovski's Lead Free crystals are much better for installations requiring hanging in extra long lengths such as: crystal curtains, walls, room-dividers or a crystal backdrop. They weigh less.

Crystal Size Conversions Tips:
1 inch = 25.5mm Multiply mm by.0392 to get size in inches or fractions of an inch so that you can visualize the size by looking at a ruler. Note: 20mm is the size of a U.S. nickle and 28mm is the size of a U.S. quarter. 16mm is about the size of a dime. 14mm is significantly smaller than a dime and is not recommended for any crystal tree project. You will find it simply too small to make an impact for the trees, but they are great linked together into ropes for decorating candelabras, candle sticks, chandeliers and other event decorations.

California Government Proposition 65 (you can Google it) states that any lead in crystal products including prisms, figurines, vases, etc. can cause reproductive and other harm from handling or ingestion of microscopic particles from handling. For this reason, among others, we no longer sell any loose pieces of lead crystals, but only Swarovski LEAD FREE which was used in both project #1 and #2 on our Stunning decor Projects pages. There is no other lead free or glass crystal that can even remotely compare. They simply don't sparkle as well. If it's not going to sparkle, what's the point of a crystal tree, right?
